Islam in American Schools

Jeff Finrow, father of a 7th grader at the Lake Stevens Middle School filed a 28 page complaint against against History Alive, the Medieval World and Beyond. The complaint, filed in June with the school district, resulted in the suspension of History Alive from the classroom pending further review. Mr. Finrow stated in his complain that the textbook contained over 90 pages on the topic of Islam and most of it was undiluted praise for that religion. Only 21 pages were devoted to Roman Catholicism and the Reformation. Mr. Finrow stated that he and his family were not opposed to students learning about Islam, but he objected to what he characterized as “Islamic propaganda.” Mr. Finow cites many passages that are misleading, inaccurate or false. Two examples from Mr. Finrow are cited here.
As part of the lesson, Lake Stevens students were required to create hallway posters on the subject of the Pillars of Islam, a clear violation of the 1st Amendment.
“Pages 125 ’The Crusades were a terrible ordeal for many Muslims. An unknown number of Muslims lost their lives in battles and massacres. Crusaders also destroyed Muslim property.’ You can almost hear the writer cry with these words. You can feel his pain, can’t you? I thought I was reading a history book not an Islamic history book!!!!
Also, the term “massacre” is only reserved for Crusaders and Christians in this book and is never used for the Muslims who killed, in the period, 270 million non-Muslims (so much for them living in peace with everyone—You can’t live in peace and kill 270 million of the people they conquered). Islam destroyed the Christian Middle East and Christian North Africa. It is estimated that upwards of 60 million Christians were slaughtered during this conquest.
In another section, the author characterizes Christian Europe as the enemy and Islam as the good guys during the Islamic wars of conquest against Europe . “Page 90 ‘In 711, Muslim armies began their conquest of present-day Spain. However at the battle of Tours in 732, enemy forces under the Frankish King Charles Martell turned the Muslims back in west-central France.’ Notice the terms: “enemy forces.” How can the French King defending his own country from foreign invaders be called an “enemy” unless the writer is a Muslim writing his own view of history devoid of any critical analysis?”
The answer to Mr. Finrow’s last question is easy to answer when you learn that the author of the Muslim propaganda in History Alive is Ayad Al Qazzazz, a California State Sacramento sociology professor and well known apologist for Islamic Jihad. In 2005, History Alive was removed from the Scottsdale, Arizona school system. Mr. Finrow’s victory 6 years later in Washington show that if parents and opponents of flawed, inaccurate textbooks fight back, the offending books can be removed.

ACT for America’s Washington State director, Kerry Hooks, read a portion of the letter from the teacher who has been harassed by CAIR. I have that letter and here is the portion that was read. She explains what happened in her classroom and transpired over it.
On October 29th, 2012, the day of the class discussion referenced in the allegation, I asked a question about who knew about Hitler or who he was. I was surprised at the lack of awareness. A few students offered what they knew and the discussion led to some members of groups who employ extreme acts such as Hamas and the Taliban. The information I shared was from a former extremist group member who had been indoctrinated that to kill a Jew or Christian would make him a martyr. He was trained in this as a young teen, subsequently did murder people but subsequently changed his life. The point that I was attempting to make was the connection that people who intend on imposing their will on others are bullies, whether they be Nazis or others, whether they be students or adults. I was very clear that I was not talking about Muslim believers or Arabs in general but that were trained to kill, groups that bombed and attacked people,and did not care that innocent people were being killed. I have shared this idea before emphasizing treating other as we want to be treated which is a class developed norm.
When (the student) raised her hand and said, “My father is a Muslim and these statements are not true,” I explained to her that I was not talking about Arabs and Muslims in general, but groups that chose to impose their will by training people to intimidate and kill other people. This discussion was not about religious beliefs. It is related to a state mandate that public schools teach about bullying and not allow it.
I am surprised and saddened that no one from the (family) contacted me about the student’s perception of the day’s discussion. I would have hoped to have had an opportunity to personally recount the substance of that day’s work and engage in a dialog to dispel any misinterpretations.
Likewise, I am also surprised that organization filing the complaint did not contact me to hear my account of the class discussion before publically criticizing me and my employer. I had absolutely no intention of nor did I disparage anyone’s religious beliefs and I regret any lingering misunderstandings.

I took a snap shot from my phone of the crowd who came out to hear Kerry Hooks and Shahram Hadian speak on CAIR. The picture does not capture the hundreds in the over flow rooms nor the ones who stood outside in the rain at the windows to listen in. (I was secretly wishing that Churches would have crowds like this to hear the preacher teach about Christ)
This community is wondering what hit them. A well funded organization, staffed with professional lawyers has descended on their little town and is making demands and accusations about one of Concrete’s favored teachers.
I have copies of the letters sent by CAIR to the school district and here are some of the things CAIR has said.
Ms. ******* is teaching students inaccurate information about Islam and Muslims…. Ms. ***** is clearly in need of cultural competency training to lessen her fear of people who are different from herself.
Therefore CAIR – WA respectfully requests the following of Concrete School District…..Clarify which text and textbooks are used to instruct students at Concrete Middle School about Islam, Muslims, or Arabs….. Institute CAIR-WA’s Diversity Training for all employees of Concrete School District.
So in short, Ms. ******* is not accurate when she says that Hamas and the Taliban are bullies. She is clearly in need of cultural competency training. The District should submit themselves to have their textbooks examined by a Muslim Brotherhood front group and that this terrorist front group should come in the Concrete School District to train all the employees, diversity training.
Perhaps, it is CAIR that is need of this training in my opinion!
