Christian Apologetics toward Islam and Missions to Muslims

The Salt of the World

Listen to today’s broadcast:

The Common Denominator, Islam

I don’t have to tell you that terrorism is on the rise in the world. There are two wars going on right now in the middle east, one between Israel and Hamas, and the other between ISIS and anyone who gets in their way. Throughout the world terror is on the rise.

There has been a common denominator in all of this since 2001. The common denominator is Islam. I hope that one day our leaders will wake up and figure this out. Until we are willing to address the real problem, which is Islam, we will never solve the problem. It is not the fanatics of “radical Islam,” it is Islam itself that is the heart of the problem.

The Salt of the World

saltToday I want to look into the Scriptures. I want to talk about Christians being the salt of the earth. This is what God called us to be in Matthew 5:13.

Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out, and to be trodden under foot of men. Mat 5:13

Speaking to His disciples, Jesus tells them that they are the salt of the earth. Then He introduces a problem. What to we do with the salt if it loses its saltiness? Salt can lose its saltiness when it is mixed with other things. Jesus tells us that when this happens the salt is good for nothing. It is then cast out and trodden under foot.

I believe that God will always have a faithful witness in the world. There will always be a remnant of faithful believers who will preach the truth. God’s hand and anointing will be  upon them.

What happens to those who allow worldliness or other things in their lives, causing them to lose their saltiness, to lose their testimony before the world. The Bible says they will be trodden under foot.

I want you to think about that. What happened to Great Briton when it lost it’s saltiness? It was once a godly nation, a nation that feared God. I spent most  of my life, 29 years, in England and I have seen what happens to a nation when it loses its effectiveness for God, their saltiness.
The United States and Canada were once godly nations, but it have now lost their saltiness. They once honored God but we have made the same mistakes that Briton made. Briton is farther down the road than ae are and farther into God’s judgment. Part of that judgment is being taken over by an enemy and that enemy is Islam. We can see the same thing coming here.

Let’s take a look at what happens when salt loses its savor. The question is, can it regain its saltiness? The most well know kind of salt is sodium chloride, we use it on our tables to season our food. At one time salt was very valuable because it was hard to come by. It was sometimes called white gold and salt routs were developed to transport it. It was well guarded. It was almost like transporting money. At times it was even used as a medium of exchange and people were paid in salt. One example is that Roman soldiers were paid with salt. Salarius is the Latin word for salt and this is where we get the word salary.

In the Bible we see salt being traded and being used to seal a covenant or contract. In 2 Chronicles 13:5 tells of of a covenant of salt.

Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? 2Ch 13:5

Here we see God calling an everlasting covenant with David a covenant of salt.

Can that which is unsavoury be eaten without salt? or is there any taste in the white of an egg? Job 6:6

Here we see that salt gives flavor to that which has no flavor.

Let your speech [be] alway with grace, seasoned with salt, that ye may know how ye ought to answer every man. Col 4:6

Here we have a metaphorical usage that says our speech is to be seasoned with salt.

On the other hand, too much salt can be harmful. One example of this is the Dead Sea. Almost nothing can live in this body of water because it has too much salt.

Salt is used for cleansing. We see this in Ezekiel 16:4 which says:

And as for thy nativity, in the day thou wast born thy navel was not cut, neither wast thou washed in water to supple thee; thou wast not salted at all, nor swaddled at all. Eze 16:4

Here we see that salt was used to cleans newborn babies.

Salt as properties of purification and preservation. This is the principle that the Lord is talking about when He says “Ye are the salt of the earth.”

If a nation loses the influence of Christian values, biblical values, if Christians don’t do their job, it is like salt losing its saltiness. When this happens the nation loses its purity and its influence. When salt loses it saltiness in a nation it is overtaken with rottenness. We see this happening before our very eyes in North America today.

It is frustrating to see the impotence of our churches today. The lack the power of God. We don’t see the moving of the Spirit of God in our midst. Why do you suppose this is? It is because we have lost our saltiness.

The saints are to be the salt in our communities. They are to be the preserving force. Our lives should make the world ashamed of its rottenness and should cause even non-Christians to live pure lives.

We, as Christians, have lost our influence over society. How has this happened? Just as salt loses it savor when it is mixed with polluting materials, the Christian loses his influence when he allows the precepts of God to be polluted by allowing worldly precepts to come into their lives.

In Matthew 13 we have the parable of the wheat and the tares.

But while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares among the wheat, and went his way. But when the blade was sprung up, and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also. So the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst not thou sow good seed in thy field? from whence then hath it tares? He said unto them, An enemy hath done this. The servants said unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up? But he said, Nay; lest while ye gather up the tares, ye root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather ye together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn. Mat 13:25-30

While he was sleeping the enemy planted the tares among the wheat. Tares look like wheat, but they are not wheat. We have been asleep and have allowed that which looks like Christianity to be planted along side of true Christianity.

Another example of allowing pollutants in is carnality. We are warned that we are to be separate form world. We are not to love the world. We are told to come out from among them. We are to live a separated life, a holy life, a life that honors God. Most Christians today do their “church duty” and then go home and live just like any lost person. Is it any wonder we have lost our saltiness? It is important that this land be salted with the truth of God’s Word.

Some weeks ago I read the following. There are times that America lost its way, but God gave a Holy Ghost revival, we called in an awakening. Charles Finney was one of the instruments used by God during the Second Great Awakening. In 1873 he said:

“Brethren, our preaching will bear its legitimate fruits. If immorality prevails in the land, the fault is ours in a great degree. If there is a decay of conscience, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the public press lacks moral discrimination, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the church is degenerate and worldly, the pulpit is responsible for it. If the world loses its interest in religion, the pulpit is responsible for it. If Satan rules in our halls of legislation, the pulpit is responsible for it. If our politics become so corrupt that the very foundations of our government are ready to fall away, the pulpit is responsible for it. Let us not ignore this fact, my dear brethren; but let us lay it to heart, and be thoroughly awake to our responsibility in respect to the morals of this nation.”

Oh how well that was said. We need to wake up to the fact that the problem in America is not with the politicians, in is with the preachers in our pulpits. It is true that Satan does rule in tha halls of legislation. Politics has become so corrupt in its foundations and our government is falling away from the principles upon which it was founded. The world has lost interest in our Christian faith. Our churches have become degenerate and worldly. The public press does lack moral discrimination.

Who is responsible for all of this? We are to be the salt, the preserving factor, to keep our nation pure. Because Christians have turned from that which is  pure and wholesome our nation has done the same. We have failed to do our job and have allowed our ways to be corrupted with the ways of the world. We have lost  our saltiness.

The questions are, How do we get it back? Can we get it back? Humanly speaking, chemically speaking, and physically speaking it is impossible. Once salt has lost its saltiness it is cast out. It is put on roadways to keep the weeds out, it kills crops, it doesn’t do anything that is productive. It becomes destructive. It is good for nothing.

If we don’t do our job we will be cast aside and God will look for another remnant. He will take the Gospel to another nation. He will bless that nation as long as they remain faithful to His precepts.

We see the example of God blessing faithfulness over and over in the Scriptures. We see it in the parable of the talents. He gave different talents to different people, and those who didn’t use them, he took away what they had. If we don’t  use what God has blessed us with we will lose it.

Can we get it back? Not in ourselves. It can only happen supernaturally. God can do a supernatural work in this nation. He can revive it. Romans 12 gives us what we must do if God is going to work.

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God. Rom 12:1-2

We need to run away from the world and run to God. We need to be transformed by the renewing of our minds. He will restore our testimony if we renew our minds by filling them with His Word. He made us and He alone can restore us. It requires repentance, a turning back to Him. This principle is also seen in 2 Chronicles 7:14.

If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.3 2Ch 7:14

I leave you with this question, Are we willing to do what we must to restore our nation?
