Christian Apologetics toward Islam and Missions to Muslims

Barbary Pirate War – Part 2

USS-Enterprise-barbary-warThe Barbary Pirate War was our first foreign conflict as a nation. Most Americans have never heard of this.

The sad thing is that, today, we see many Islamists, and even our President, distorting this history. They are telling us that Islam was an important part of our history and were involved in the founding of this nation. Our goal is to reveal the truth concerning America’s early relations with Islam.

In 1784 the Muslim nations, Algiers, Morocco, Tripoli, and Tunis, which were quasi independent states of the Ottoman Empire, sent out corsairs to attack our shipping. Even before George Washington, was was really the eighth president of our nation, there were seven under the Continental Congress and the Articles of Confederation, he was the first president under the Constitution, we sent three ambassadors to these Islamic nations to try to negotiate with them. Benjamin Franklin was one of them and Thomas Jefferson was another, the third was John Adams. These men learned something important. They found that they could not really talk to the people in charge of these Islamic nations. Thomas Jefferson said, “They don’t understand anything but gun powder and shot.”

This is a forgotten part of our history. Dr. Harding had to go back to the books of the 1800’s to find the facts and the battles and what we actuality did in this ware that spanned the presidencies of four very prominent presidents..These presidents were George Washington, John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.

The nation was basically broke under Washington, but Adams took some of the money in the coffers and put it toward the Navy. He knew that something had to be done about these Barbary Pirates attacks on our people. He knew that the American people were not ready for another war.

When Thomas Jefferson became President we were giving 20% of our national GNP as tribute money to these Islamic nations. He said “not one more cent for tribute, but millions for defense. He took that 20% and put it into the Navy and established the Marine Corps to fight and stop what was going on in the Mediterranean area.

The Islamic nations said you will either pay us well or fight us well. Having been one of the ambassadors to these countries, Thomas Jefferson knew their mindset. He understood the culture. As a matter of fact, a Muslim from Minnesota named Ellison took his oath of office on the Qur’an and he said, it was Thomas Jefferson’s Qur’an so he must have thought that Muslims had an integral role in the United States and the formulation of our country. When he put his hand on the Qur’an he swore to uphold the Constitution of the United States. At the time there was a big controversy because those who understand the Constitution and the Qur’an know that they are diametrically opposed one to the other. The Constitution stands for liberty and the Qur’an stands for bondage.

Keith Ellison is feeding America with disinformation. He was suggesting that because Jefferson owned a Qur’an, he was open to Islamic teaching. This is not the case at all. The reason Jefferson had a Qur’an was to learn about his nations enemy. The Muslim nations called us a weak Christian nation. He knew something that our leaders seem to have forgotten today. A basic military principle is to know your enemy.

We need to remember that the role of Islam and Muslim nations in the beginning was that of an enemy. By the time an end was brought to the Barbary Pirates they had kidnapped approximately 1.5 million people and enslaved them. Obviously all of those taken prisoners were not Americas. The attacked ships from all of the European nations. The way they treated those taken captive was almost inhuman. It reminds me of they way ISIS is treating prisoners today.

Although all of those taken were not Americans, there were enough to cause their names to be read in our churches and prayers offered for them. There is a letter from the Boston Patriot Newspaper recounting the story of one man recounting the story of when he was captured by the Algerians. He tell how they were stripped of their clothing, they under the severe lashes of the taskmaster, and kept in filth and misery. After telling the horrors of his captivity, he said that death would soon relieve him of the suffering, but his hope was the his experience would serve to help others. He told his wife that he would “die in the hope of the promises of the Gospel of Jesus Christ and that He will present unspotted before the Father. Farewell all my friends, farewell all my relations, farewell Salem Massachusetts, farewell America, and last, farewell to you my dear, I remain your loving husband, Francis Garcia.” This was from a captured sailor that was imprisoned by these Islamic terrorists.

For anyone to say Islam had a pivotal role in the development of this country is unconscionable, it is incorrect, it is nothing but misinformation. It is intentional propagate to mislead the American people. What makes it even worse is that it is coming from Congressman Ellison and even the President, himself. It makes us ask if they are for this nation, or are they our enemies from within.
