But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and [be] ready always to [give] an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear: 1 Peter 3:15
We need to know what we believe (doctrine) and why we believe it. We need to be able to defend what we believe. We need to be good workmen for God.
Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. 2 Timothy 2:15
We also need to be aware that there will be false teachers and false doctrine, especially as we approach the end of this age. We need to have a sure answer and be able to put show the error of false teaching.
Holding fast the faithful word as he hath been taught, that he may be able by sound doctrine both to exhort and to convince the gainsayers. Titus 1:9
One of the purposes of Fortress of Faith is to equip you to stand for sound doctrine and to be able to answer those who promote the teachings of Islam.
Muslims tell us that the Qur’an is superior to our Bible. They are trying to tell us that our Bible has been corrupted. They are also telling us that their religion is superior to theirs. They tell us that the Jews corrupted the Old Testament and the Christians corrupted the New Testament. They say that because of this Allah had to send the final message through Muhammad to correct these corruptions.
Muslims also try to tell us that Allah and Jehovah are the same God. They want us to believe that Allah was the God of Abraham, Moses, David, etc.
When I hear a Muslim say this I respond; then your god must have a begotten son. They will respond that Allah does not have a son, to which I reply; then we don’t worship the same God. My God, Jehovah, has a begotten Son, Jesus Christ, God in the flesh, Emmanuel (God with us). God’s Son became flesh and gave His life on the cross as a ransom for man’s sin.
Now let’s take a closer look at the Qur’an. The Qur’an is a man-made effort with Satanic influences. Muhammad claims to have received revelations from a spirit (jin) who said he was the angel Gabriel. Without getting into the details, the first time Muhammad had these “revelations” he thought he was demon possessed. I believe that his first impressions were the correct impressions.
Many people have said that the Devil wrote the Qur’an. I have read it several times and I can tell you that if the Devil wrote it, it would have been better written. About one fifth of the Qur’an is incapable of being understood. Even Muslim scholars admit this fact. These scholars say that one day Allah will clarify these passages.
The Qur’an has many stories about Bible characters. We are familiar with some of them because Muhammad repeated some of the Bible stories he was familiar with. We need to remember that Muhammad could neither read nor write. He didn’t write the Qur’an himself.
The Qur’an was not put into written form until 20 years after the death of Muhammad. When they did start writing it down there were 7 different oral versions floating around. This is found in the Hadith and there are even instructions on what to do when they found differences and contradictions.
First of all we need to understand that prior to the Qur’an there were no books in Arabic because the vast majority of Arabs could not read. The Arabic alphabet was in its infancy at that time. The first book written in Arabic was the Qur’an.
Muhammad traded a lot in Syria, which at that time was a Christian nation, and therefore heard a lot of “Christian” stories. His wife’s uncle was an Ebonite priest. The Ebonites were a corrupted sect of Christianity that rejected all of the writings of Paul. As a result Muhammad also rejected the writings of Paul as he borrowed from “Christianity” in forming his new religion. Muhammad borrowed from the other religions of his day, including paganism and some of the fictional stories from the sects that spun off of Christianity found their way into the Qur’an.
On famous story is from the Second Targum of Ester, which dates to the second century, Tragums were fictional stories using Bible characters to teach moral lessons for children. This story is found in Sura 27:17-44.
According to this story Solomon had birds as part of his army. I guess that in this story we find the first air force. According to this story Solomon had birds trained to pick up rocks and drop them on the enemy.
The story says that one day the Hoopa bird was missing. He investigates and finds that the Hoopa bird is visiting with the Queen of Sheba. Upon his return, the Hoopa bird tells him of this great queen and how Solomon must visit her. Solomon sent the Hoopa bird back to tell the Queen of Sheba that she must come and visit him. According to the Qur’an she was to give up her idols and come worship Allah.
A funny part of the story is that when she comes to the throne room there is a mirrored floor which she thinks is water. To keep from getting her skirt wet she lifts it up. The part of the story that is in the tragum but not in the Qur’an is that when she lifted up her skirt it was revealed that her lags were very hairy.
The stories like this that are found in the Qur’an prove that Muhammad was plagiarizing the writings of other religions, claiming that they were from Allah. These things were written long before Muhammad received his “revelations” from the jin who was impersonating Gabriel.
Here are some other stories that found their way into the Qur’an:
- The Story of Cain and the Raven in Surah 5:31-34 comes from three sources: a. Targum of Joziah (200AD) b. Targum of Jerusalem and c. Pirke De Rabbi Eliezer (100BC)
- The Story of Abraham destroying smaller idols with a larger id Sol in Surah 21:51-71. Its source is found in the Midrash Genesis Rabbah (2nd Cent).
- The story of Solomon and his bird air force in Surah 27:17-44. Its source is II Targum of Esther (2nd Cent)
- The Story of Jesus born under a palm tree in Surah 19:29-33 come from Apocryphal gospels (4th Cent.)
- The Story of Jesus making birds out of clay in Surah 3:49 is from the Gospel of Thomas (2nd Cent.)
Here is a video that tells of these stories:
None of the sources for these stories were accepted as Scripture by either the Jews or Bible believing Christians.
This is a big problem for Muslims today. Their claim that the Qur’an is the very words of Allah and is without error stands on very shaky ground.
The earliest writing of a passage from the Qur’an is found in the Dome of the Rock. This dates to about 70 years after the death of Muhammad. The oldest manuscripts that are claimed to by Uthman’s manuscripts don’t fit with the style of the Arabic language of his time. The script used indicates that they had to be written 150 years later at the earliest.
What we have looked at today tells us the the Qur’an is a false book. Muslims are following this false book and are lost. We need to get the truth to them so they can be saved.
