Today I want to take a look at the population statistics for Muslims around the world. I want t0 analyze the growth of Islam. Pew research has been saying for many years that Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world today. There are about 1.7 billion Muslims in the world and about 2.2 billion Christians. Just after WW!, 100 years ago, the Muslim population was estimated to be about 300 million. This means there are more than 5 1/2 times as many Muslims in the world today as there were 100 years ago. The number of Christians is stagnant, we are not growing, nor are we shrinking.
The old saying is, if you are not growing, you are going backwards. These figures are actual population numbers, and not percentages. This means that there are more and more non-Christians. Of those who are not Christians, more and more of them are Muslims.
After you hear what I will be sharing with you today you may get discouraged and feel we are losing the battle. If the status quo continues we will lose the battle, I want you to understand that I have read the last chapter, and we win. Take heart, Christianity is not dead, Jesus Christ will be victorious in the end.
The Bible says:
These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)
Don’t be discouraged, victory is ours through the Lord Jesus Christ.
And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. (Galatians 6:9)
We need to keep on doing what is right and have the courage to stand up for truth.
Let’s look at some of the numbers. We sill start by looking at the populations of Muslims around the world. The largest Muslim population is not in the Middle East, it is in Indonesia. Most of the Muslims in the world live in Asia. This surprises many people.
Indonesia is 88% Muslim and there are 212 million Muslims, India is in second place even though India is largely Hindu. only 14% of India’s population is Muslim. Because India is so big 183 million Muslims live there. Pakistan is third with 173 million, which is about 97% of the population. Bangladesh comes in 4th with 138 million. Nigeria is in 5th place with 81 million. It is about half Muslim and half non-Muslim. Iran is in 6th place, then Egypt. Egypt is the largest Arab nation in the world, and ti is about 95% Muslim.
Notice that we didn’t get to the Arabs until 7th place. We make a mistake when we think that most Muslims are Arabs. Only about 15% of them are.
Islam originated in Arabia, and is practiced in Arabic. The Qur’an is only supposed to be read, studied, and memorized in Arabic. The formal prayers are to be recited in Arabic. Most of those practicing Islam are just parroting words they don’t understand. They have to trust their imam to be telling them the truth.
Let’s continue with our list. Turkey is in 8th place, Algeria is in 9th place and 10th is Morocco. Four of the top ten are on the continent of Africa. There are many more African nations which are Islamic.
Now lets take a look at the United States. Data from the ARDA is based on the US Census estimates only 3 million Muslims in the USA. However, the FBI estimates the real number to be 7 million and CAIR (Council of American Islamic Relations) estimates the number to be 10 Million.
Using data from the 1980-2010 Religious Congregations and Membership Studies, this list ranks U.S. metro areas on the highest total number of adherents and the highest percent of the population who are Muslim.
Congregational “Adherents” include all full members, their children, and others who regularly attend services. “Percent” is the percentage of the total population that belongs to that denomination. Note: Adherents are sometimes residents of a county different than the location of their congregation.

Many think that Dearborn, MI is the largest Islamic community in America, but you can see that it is in 7th place. There are 2 things that are important about Dearborn. First, they are Arab Muslims, and secondly it is the oldest Muslim community in America. They are more well entrenched and they have consolidated themselves into a very large pocked in Dearborn. This started with Henry Ford. He was antisemitic and he found that the Arabs were good workers so he imported many of them. Many of them have become very wealthy and influential in Dearborn.
The numbers in the above table are based on the US Census of 2010, and upon regular attenders of the religious services. The numbers are of practicing Muslims in these cities. It does not include those who are Muslims in name only.
Here are links to a couple of old articles we did on this subject.
